Dog behavior · Home alone

My dog destroyed everything in sight. Now one chew keeps him busy for hours.

Every chew I bought was gone before I reached the car. This one keeps him busy until I'm home.

The sofa arm I came home to. Murphy now, busy on his chew all afternoon.

Every morning I closed the front door and stood there listening. A minute later it started. By the time I got home at six there was a new hole in the couch or a shoe in pieces on the rug.

I work full time, and Murphy spends most of the day alone. Friends told me to walk him more, so I took him out for an hour before work. He came home tired and chewed the couch anyway, and I felt awful about it.

"I used to stand at my own front door with my keys in my hand, scared of what he'd chewed while I was gone."

Every chew was gone before I reached the car

I wasn't cheap about it. I bought every chew the pet store had, and wrote down how long each one lasted.

Rawhide

What finally kept him busy all day

Our trainer put it simply. His chewing has to go somewhere, and if nothing I give him lasts, the couch will. She handed me a Himalayan yak cheese chew.

It's a hard cheese with just 3 natural ingredients. He softens it and scrapes it down a little at a time, so it lasts for hours without being harder than his teeth. Murphy worked his first one for days.

  1. He chews it soft

The hard cheese softens slowly as he gnaws on it.

  2. He scrapes it down

A little comes off at a time, so it lasts for hours.

  3. The last bit puffs

Microwave the end and it turns into a crunchy puff.

What my day looks like now

  1. 8:00

I hand him his chew and lock the door. No bracing, no guilt.

  2. 12:30

The dog walker texts a photo. Still chewing, couch untouched.

  3. 6:00

I open the front door to a whole couch and a happy, tired dog.

  4. Day 2

Same chew, still going, and the couch is still in one piece.

It's not just Murphy

My dog absolutely loves these yak chews! He is aggressive chewer and these chews keep him busy for 2 days straight!

My doodle chews through most things in 15 min. The yak chews entertain her for an entire day, sometimes more!

Winston loves the Yak bones and I love the time it takes for him to chew it down. It gives me time to focus on other things.

Two questions every owner asks me

Won't he finish it in minutes?

Every other chew went that fast. This one he has to wear down, so even an aggressive chewer needs several sessions to finish one.

Is it too hard for his teeth?

It softens as he works it, and he scrapes it down a little at a time, so it lasts without being harder than his teeth. It's vet-approved.
